Rama on the other hand, pacifying Lakshmana (son of Sumitra), who was very much agitated and infatuated with anger, spoke the following words:
क्रोध से व्याकुल सौमित्रि लक्ष्मण को देखकर, राम ने उन्हें शांत किया और यह वचन कहा।
"While Bharata, wieldin a bow and highly wise-man himself is coming here, what is the use of a bow or sword with a shield?"
यहाँ धनुष, तलवार या ढाल की क्या आवश्यकता है? जब महान धनुर्धर और बुद्धिमान भरत स्वयं आ गए हैं।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v3
पितुस्सत्यं प्रतिश्रुत्य हत्वा भरतमागतम् |
किम् करिष्यामि राज्येन सापवादेन लक्ष्मण || २-९७-३
"O, Lakshmana! Having promised to make our father's wish a reality. What shall I do with the kingdom by acquiring an ill-fame in killing Bharata who came here to see me?"
पिता की आज्ञा का पालन करने के लिए भरत को मारकर, हे लक्ष्मण, मैं इस अपयश वाले राज्य का क्या करूँगा?
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v4
यद्द्रव्यं बान्दवानां वा मित्राणां वाक्षये भवत् |
नाहं तप्त्प्रतिगृह्णीयां भक्षान्विषकृतानिव २-९७-४
"I should not enjoy the spoils obtained by slaying a relative or friend, like the partaking of a poisoned food."
जो धन बांधवों या मित्रों के क्षय से प्राप्त हो, उसे मैं विष से बने भोजन की तरह ग्रहण नहीं करूँगा।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v5
धर्ममर्थं च कामं च पृथिवीं चापि लक्षण |
इच्छामि भवतामर्थे एतत् प्रतिशृणोमि ते || २-९७-५
"O, Lakshmana! It is for your sake I desire virtue, legitimately acquired wealth and pleasure or even the earth itself. I promise this to you."
हे राजन, मैं आपकी भलाई के लिए धर्म, अर्थ, काम और पृथ्वी की कामना करता हूँ। मैं आपको यही वचन देता हूँ।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v6
भ्रातृइणां संग्रहार्थं च सुखार्थं चापि लक्ष्मण |
राज्यमप्यहमिच्छामि सत्येनायुधमालभे || २-९७-६
"O, Lakshmana! I desire the throne only for the protection and happiness of my brothers. I touch my weapon and swear this fact."
हे लक्ष्मण, भाइयों के कल्याण और सुख के लिए मैं राज्य की इच्छा करता हूँ, और सत्य के बल पर मैं अपनी प्रतिज्ञा का पालन करूँगा।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v7
नेयं मम मही सौम्य दुर्लभा सागराम्बरा |
न हीच्छेयमधर्मेण शक्रत्वमपि लक्ष्मण || २-९७-७
"This earth, bounded by the sea is not hard to obtain for me, O the excellent man! I do not indeed wish even the position of Indra by unrighteousness."
हे सौम्य लक्ष्मण, यह विशाल पृथ्वी मेरी नहीं है और न ही मैं अधर्म से इंद्र का पद भी चाहता हूँ।
"If there be happiness that I could enjoy without Bharata or you or without Shatrughna, may it be without Shatrughna, may it be burnt to ashes by fire, O the honour-giver!"
हे भरत, शत्रुघ्न और आपको छोड़कर मेरा कोई भी सुख अग्नि की भांति भस्म हो जाए।
"I think Bharata was back to Ayodhya, with full of affection for his brothers. He is dearer to me than my life- he who is mindful of the duties of his race. Hearing of my exile and that I was wearing matted locks and the antelope skin, accompanied by Seetha and you, O most valiant of warriors, in his devotion towards me and due to the distress that troubles his mind, Bharata has come to see me. He has not come with any other motive."
भरत, जो अपने भाई से बहुत स्नेह करते हैं, कुल की मर्यादा का ध्यान रखते हुए अयोध्या आ गए हैं। मुझे वन में जटा और वल्कल धारण किए हुए, सीता के साथ और तुम जैसे वीर पुरुष के साथ देखकर, भरत का हृदय स्नेह से भर गया और वे व्याकुल होकर मुझे देखने आए हैं, इसके सिवा उनका कोई और उद्देश्य नहीं है।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v10
अम्बाअं च कैकयीं रुष्य परुषं चाप्रियं वदन् |
प्रसाद्य पितरं स्रीमान् राज्यं मे दातुमागतः || २-९७-१२
"Getting angry with Kaikeyi his mother and speaking unkind and harsh words to her, the glorious Bharata after getting permission from our further, came here to bestow kingdom to me."
माँ कौसल्या और कैकेयी पर क्रोधित होकर, कड़वे और अप्रिय वचन कहते हुए, श्रीमान् राजा दशरथ ने अपने पिता को प्रसन्न करके राज्य मुझे देने के लिए कहा।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v11
प्राप्त कालम् यद् एषो अस्मान् भरतो द्रष्टुम् इग्च्छति |
अस्मासु मनसा अप्य् एष न अहितम् किंचिद् आचरेत् || २-९७-१३
"This is the proper time for Bharata to come here and see us. He does not behave or even think unkindly towards us."
जब भरत हमें देखने आए हैं, तो वे मन से भी हमारा कुछ बुरा नहीं चाहेंगे। वे हमारे हितैषी हैं और हमें कष्ट नहीं पहुंचाएंगे।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v12
विप्रियम् कृत पूर्वम् ते भरतेन कदा न किम् |
ईदृशम् वा भयम् ते अद्य भरतम् यो अत्र शन्कसे || २-९७-१४
"Has Bharata at any time done any harm to you previously? What so the reason for you to be so apprehensive of Bharata now?"
भरत ने पहले कभी आपका क्या बुरा किया था, जिससे आज आपको भरत पर इतना संदेह हो रहा है?
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v13
न हि ते निष्ठुरम् वाच्यो भरतो न अप्रियम् वचः |
अहम् ह्य् अप्रियम् उक्तः स्याम् भरतस्य अप्रिये कृते || २-९७-१५
"Indeed, Bharata must not hear harsh or disagreeable word from your lips. If an affront is offered to him, it is offered to me!"
भरत कभी भी कठोर या अप्रिय वचन नहीं बोलते। यदि भरत को अप्रिय कार्य करने के लिए विवश किया गया होता, तो मैं भी अप्रिय वचन कहने वाला हो जाता।
"O, Lakshmana! How should a son strike his father, even in a distress or a brother strike a brother who is as dear to him as his life?"
यह श्लोक पूछता है कि किसी विपत्ति में पुत्र अपने पिता को कैसे मार सकता है, या लक्ष्मण अपने भाई राम को कैसे मार सकते हैं। यह रिश्तों की पवित्रता और ऐसे भयानक कृत्यों की असंभवता पर जोर देता है।
"If you are uttering these words for the sake of the kingdom, I shall tell Bharata to give the kingdom to you, when I see him."
यदि तुम राज्य के लिए यह बात कह रहे हो, तो भरत को देखकर मैं कहूँगा कि राज्य उन्हें दे दिया जाए।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v16
उच्यमानो हि भरतो मया लक्ष्मण तत्त्वतः |
राज्यम् अस्मै प्रयग्च्छ इति बाढम् इत्य् एव वक्ष्यति || २-९७-१८
"O, Lakshmana! When Bharata receives this command from me, "Cede the empire to him", he will answer, So, be it."
हे लक्ष्मण, यदि मैं भरत से कहूँ कि यह राज्य तुम्हें दिया जाता है, तो वह सत्य ही कहेगा कि "हाँ, मैं इसे स्वीकार करता हूँ।"
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v17
तथा उक्तो धर्म शीलेन भ्रात्रा तस्य हिते रतः |
लक्ष्मणः प्रविवेश इव स्वानि गात्राणि लज्जया || २-९७-१९
At these words spoken by his honourable brother, to whom he was devoted, abashed, shrank into himself.
जब धर्मपरायण भाई लक्ष्मण ने ऐसा कहा, तो वह उनके हित में लगे हुए थे, मानो वे लज्जा से अपने अंगों में ही प्रवेश कर गए हों।
Listening to these words ashamed, answered: "I think that our father Dasaratha came here to see you himself."
लक्ष्मण ने वह बात सुनकर लज्जित होकर उत्तर दिया, "मैं समझता हूँ कि स्वयं पिता दशरथ आपसे मिलने आए हैं।"
Observing the emberassed , Rama said, "I think the mighty armed Dasaratha came here to see us."
लक्ष्मण को संकोच करते देख राम ने कहा, "मुझे लगता है कि यह महाबली हमें देखने ही यहाँ आए हैं।"
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v20
अथवा नौ ध्रुवं मन्ये मन्यमानः सुखोचितौ |
वन वासम् अनुध्याय गृहाय प्रतिनेष्यति || २-९७-२२
"Or rather, to my mind, as he knows that we have been accustomed to comfort, reflecting that we are dwelling in the forest, he wishes to take us home."
अथवा, जो सुख के अभ्यस्त हैं, वे वनवास का विचार करके घर लौट आएंगे, ऐसा मैं निश्चित रूप से मानता हूँ।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v21
इमाम् वा अप्य् एश वैदेहीम् अत्यन्त सुख सेविनीम् |
एतौ तौ सम्प्रकाशेते गोत्रवन्तौ मनो रमौ || २-९७-२३
"The glorious Dasaratha, my father possibly will take back Seetha from the forest, she who has ever lived in the heart of prosperity."
यह वैदेही अत्यंत सुख भोगने वाली है, और ये दोनों गोत्र वाले, मन को हरने वाले, एक साथ शोभा पा रहे हैं।
"O, warrior! See those two excellent horses of noble breed, shining attractively and vying with the wind in swiftness."
ये दोनों श्रेष्ठ, सुंदर और शक्तिशाली घोड़े, जो वायु के समान वेग वाले हैं, एक साथ चमक रहे हैं।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v23
स एष सुमहा कायः कम्पते वाहिनी मुखे |
नागः शत्रुम्जयो नाम वृद्धः तातस्य धीमतः || २-९७-२५
"Here is that colossal elephant who is moving at the head of the army called Shatrunjaya, the aged companion of our sagacious father."
यह महान शरीर नदी के मुख पर कांप रहा है। यह नाग शत्रुंजय नाम का है, जो बुद्धिमान पिता का वृद्ध है।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v24
न तु पश्यामि तच्छत्रं पाण्डरं लोकसत्कृअम् |
पितुर्दिव्यं महाबाहो संशयो भवतीह मे २-९७-२६
"O, the mighty armed! But I do not see that white heavenly canopy of our father, well known insignia in the world. An apprehension on this point is created in my mind."
हे महाबाहो! मुझे वह श्वेत, लोक-पूजित दिव्य शत्रु दिखाई नहीं देता, जिससे मेरे मन में संदेह उत्पन्न हो रहा है।
"O, Lakshmana! You get down from the top of the tree. Act on my word." Thus spoke the virtuous Rama to that Lakshmana.
राम ने लक्ष्मण से कहा, "हे सौमित्र, तुम वृक्ष की चोटी से नीचे उतरो और मेरा वचन मानो।" धर्मात्मा राम ने इस प्रकार लक्ष्मण से कहा।
Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v26
अवतीर्य तु साल अग्रात् तस्मात् स समितिम् जयः |
लक्ष्मणः प्रान्जलिर् भूत्वा तस्थौ रामस्य पार्श्वतः || २-९७-२८
Descending from the top of that Sala tree, Lakshmana the victorious in battle, with joined palms, stood by the side of Rama.

Ayodhya Kanda – Sarga 97 · v27
भरतेन अथ संदिष्टा सम्मर्दो न भवेद् इति |
समन्तात् तस्य शैलस्य सेना वासम् अकल्पयत् || २-९७-२९
Commanded by Bharata that no trampling of army should be made in the hermitage of Rama, the army was encamped round the mountain.
भरत के आदेशानुसार, युद्ध न हो इस विचार से, सेना ने उस पर्वत के चारों ओर अपना डेरा जमा लिया।
That royal army of Ikshvaku race, crowded with elephants horses and chariots was encamped around the edge of the mountain occupying an area of one Yojana and a half.

Brought by the virtuous Bharata, who laid aside his arrogance, placing the righteousness in forefront in order to propitiate Rama, that army showed itself to be disciplined in the vicinity of Chitrakuta.
भरत ने चित्रकूट में, धर्म को आगे रखकर और अभिमान को दूर करके, रघु के पुत्र (राम) को प्रसन्न करने के लिए जो नीति चलाई, वह अत्यंत शोभायमान हुई।
